Day 10, Tasmania, Picnic pt to Cradle Mountain, Waldheim Cabins
Very excited today, especially Naarah, as going to Cradle Mountain was the trigger for booking the trip in the first place. Enjoyed the drive, lovely views, and watched the temperature drop as we gained altitude. Arriving early we bought our bus pass and caught it in to do some of the shorter walks. Everyone must do this, the road is single lane loop to Dove lake, and it wouldn't be safe to have 100s of cars driving in and out. If you are staying at accommodation within the park you are allowed to tag on behind a bus, until you reach your destination. Thankfully we were allowed to do this, as strictly speaking no campervans allowed in fullstop. We gained a once off special permission!!! Much easier then lugging luggage and all assorted foodstuffs etc for 3 nights/days on the bus, and then walking it in to the Waldheim cabins.
Weather turned on cold and windy with threatened rain as we arrived at info centre.Main highway to turnoff to Cradle Mountain, love the changes in scenery.
However, until checkin at 2 pm we warmed up our hill legs seeing Pencil Pine and Knyvet falls, a very easy walk.
Loved the miss everywhere
Just like there's been a bush wedding and the petals have been strewn everywhere.
Petal producer.Leatherwood tree (Eucryphia lucida).
Checked in, and bus 'train' completed, we were happy with our little cabin, exploring the surrounds came next.
Our cabinFront entrance to the historical house.
Our cabin, cute and cosy.
The old 'original' cabin is nice, well not quite original as it's suffered being burnt down and rebuilt the same. I found it interesting they did all the walks/climbs without any of our fancy gear we have today. No wicking shirts for them, but probably original merino wear to keep warm. But I'm not going to follow having cold baths in the stream water, even too cold for me.
Went out later afternoon and spotted the wombats, its wombat heaven not far from the cabins with a valley area, no trees to speak of, and lots of grass for them to munch on.
Wombat heaven.Loved these trees. Richea pandanifolia.
